G6PD or Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is a hereditary disease and is the most common human enzyme deficiency. About 400 million people are affected by this disease worldwide. It is also referred to favism because some people afflicted by G6PD are allergic to fava beans. Red wine, moth balls, products that contain blue food coloring, some medicines and antibiotics, tonic water and legumes are all contraindicated for G6PD.

Consumption of these foods, red wine, medicines and other contraindications can cause severe anemia. Resveratrol is a compound found in red wine. I don’t know it is the compound in particular that is banned for people who have G6PD. It would be great if people with G6PD could take resveratrol for their other ailments such as high blood pressure or cancer.
